A vintage style shopping experience
After my initial excitement of hearing about a new vintage destination in Cork, I finally managed to pop in for my first visit last week. It’s a little out of the way on the far end of Cornmarket Street, but well worth the ramble for vintage and fashion lovers alike. Stocking a beautiful range of vintage style clothing inspired by the decades including hats, shoes and accessories, as well as a select range of original vintage pieces, this store is a joy to browse. Even if you think vintage is not for you, you may be surprised here as most of the stock is actually new, but will transport you back to the romance and beauty of a bygone era, perfect if you’re looking for something a little different for an occasion.
With modern designers and high street retailers increasingly looking to the past for inspiration and more and more shoppers appreciating the elegance and flattery of vintage designs, it’s hardly surprising that the vintage genre has grown in popularity over the last few years, particularly in Cork. My personal belief is that women in Cork have become a good deal more interested developing an individual look while investing in classic styles & interesting pieces that won’t date. The one thing I love about vintage style clothing now, is that it doesn’t have to look “vintage”. That is to say you can add these pieces into your wardrobe, pair with modern hair and accessories and look perfectly current and chic. It’s also an added bonus when someone enviably asks you where you bought your dress!
Emma, the owner, has lovingly restored this once derelict Victorian townhouse into an elegant and inviting boutique. The decor is simple, uncluttered with a few well chosen stand out pieces such as the 50’s inspired chandeliers, the art deco cash desk from France and lovely details such as custom-made dress forms and changing screens. At the back of the shop, a Moroccan tiled courtyard (where Emma plans to host vintage themed soirees!) leads through to a 50’s themed beauty salon where customers can avail of vintage hair and make-up application (by appointment). Emma is clearly passionate about what she does and wants to create a whole vintage experience for the shopper and I for one will be watching this space with anticipation…
